Plan ahead

Whether you throw a party for just a few people or the whole family, putting it together is rewarding and fun for everyone. Good organization is a staple here, so you don't get lost in the long list of products.

Step 1

Pick a theme

Everything starts with a theme. Make it fun and surprising, or classy and elegant, depending on the type of party you’re organizing. Don’t hesitate to let your imagination run wild. Themes are important because we often forget what our birthday or other special occasion commemorates, so take this opportunity to let everyone know that it's not just any old day. Be creative and use creativity as a theme - think about everything from food and color scheme all the way through specific trivia questions.

Step 2

Make a shopping list

Once you pick the theme, decide on the menu. Take the time to find some party recipes online, check your supplies, and add missing products. In this order. You may have alcohol and snacks ready, but lack matches or sugar.

Step 3

Invite guests

Figure out how many people you can invite and then make a list of guests. Remember that some will want to take their “plus-ones”, and others may not be able to come. Also, decide if you prefer to prepare everything on your own or ask someone for help.

Things to Remember

If you are hosting a dinner party, consider your guests' dietary needs. If they cannot have meat or dairy products, it is best to replace them with alternative options that still allow people who do not eat those things to enjoy the festivities! One option would be replacing the tortillas in chicken tacos with lettuce and vegetables.

You can also try making vegan taco salad rolls instead of traditional Mexican-style ones by substituting beans for ground beef, eggs for cheese and guacamole as well as adding some chopped cilantro on top of each one.

Some guests don't want to or can't drink alcoholic drinks. Providing a non-alcoholic option can help this group of people enjoy the party. It is also important to have an understanding that there are times when alcohol isn't appropriate, such as during pregnancy or recovery from alcoholism. Keeping in mind these circumstances and providing alternate options will show your hospitality skills and may even create new guests with similar life experiences who would love to come back for more festivities at a later date!

Can you throw a party without music? Legends say somebody tried it once, and it didn’t end well. A good playlist playing in the background always gets a party started. Take some time to match your tunes with your party’s theme.

Trivia competition? Board games? Singing? Dancing? Plan some activities, but don’t force anyone to take part if they don’t want to. That’s key to making everyone entertained and comfortable at your party.
