Food storage basics

The rules that hold for every food in your kitchen, from the date on the label to the fridge and the freezer.

Questions people ask

How long after the expiration date can you eat food?

Food stays safe after a quality date for as long as it's handled properly and shows no signs of spoilage, so the date doesn't set a cutoff. The exception is infant formula, which you shouldn't use after its use by date.

Can you freeze food in its original packaging?

Yes, it's safe to freeze meat or poultry in its original packaging. That wrap lets air through, so quality may diminish over time, and for long storage you should overwrap it.

What temperature should a freezer be?

A freezer should be at 0°F (-18°C). Food stored at that temperature stays safe, though its quality decreases the longer it's frozen.

Can you wash fruit and vegetables with soap?

No. Soap, detergent, and commercial produce wash aren't recommended, because produce is porous and can absorb them. Plain running water is what the FDA advises.

What makes food spoil?

Molds, yeasts, and bacteria can multiply and cause food to spoil. Viruses can't grow in food and don't cause spoilage.

Is food still safe if its package tears in the freezer?

Yes. If a package accidentally tears or opens while the food is in the freezer, the food is still safe to use. Overwrap or rewrap it.
